IEC 62133 TESTING AND APPROVALS

IEC 62133 is the International Standard for Portable Sealed Secondary Cells, and Batteries made from these Cells for use in Portable Applications.   IEC 62133 specifies requirements and tests for the safe operation of portable sealed secondary Lithium-ion cells and batteries containing non-acid electrolyte, under their intended use and reasonable misuse conditions. IEC 62133 addresses various aspects of battery safety, including mechanical, electrical, and chemical safety.  IEC 62133 applies to batteries that are used in consumer, industrial, commercial, medical, and military products.

There are currently two different versions: IEC 62133 2nd Edition and IEC 62133-2 1st Edition (2017). It is critical to understand the differences between IEC 62133 2nd Edition and IEC 62133-2 1st Edition, and their relevance to your target markets.  IEC 62133-2:2017 is specific to Lithium systems, and is much more comprehensive with the tests, as well as normative and informative annexes, than the previous edition IEC 62133:2012. The European Union (EU) adopted 62133-2 1st edition in March, 2021, and new Lithium-ion batteries introduced into the EU must comply with these requirements.  In addition, the US and Canada have adopted ANSI/UL 62133-2 and CSA C22.2 No. 62133-2:20 with phased enforcement over time.

As part of a battery development project, Mobile Power Solutions (MPS) can perform IEC 62133 pre-testing at the prototype phase and facilitate formal IEC 62133 testing at the pre-production launch phase.
