CSZ Altitude test chamber simulates 100,000 feet altitude

Mobile Power Solutions (MPS) provides comprehensive Regulatory compliance, PerformanceSafety, and Environmental testing for Lithium batteries, as well as third party batteries and cells produced by other manufacturers.  Note that some, but not all, of these available tests may be required based on the regulatory approvals applied to the battery.  MPS differentiates itself from other battery manufacturers by offering a comprehensive array of test equipment and services to support testing needs far beyond the obligatory regulatory approvals. MPS is ANAB accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and certified to ISO 9001:2015 and AS 9100D.

MPS offers engineering services, acting as an extension of a customer’s design team to review end user requirements, participate in brainstorming to maximize efficiency and minimize risk, and assist in roadmap development around mobile power – e.g. new cell technologies, hybrid systems, and regenerative energy capture schemes.

Our 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art test facilities is one of the most comprehensive battery test facilities in North America, and includes the latest environmental battery testing equipment needed to meet and exceed the testing requirements for a wide range of applications. Our most commonly used equipment includes:

  • Maccor automated battery cyclers
  • HP Data acquisition systems (voltage, current, and temperature)
  • M/RAD Shock machine
  • LDS Vibration table
  • Low-pressure chambers
  • Thermal testing chambers
  • Abuse testing bunkers

ENVIRONMENTAL TEST EQUIPMENT

Thermal cycling chamber

Environmental testing ensures that batteries can withstand typical and extreme conditions when in the field.  Environmental testing simulates extreme environmental conditions that batteries may experience.  These tests expose batteries to a variety of conditions such as heat, cold, corrosion, salt spray, humidity, thermal cycling, vibration and shock testing.  The environmental test equipment (listed below) is designed specifically for environmental testing of batteries.

  • Thermal cycling chambers
  • Thermal stabilization chambers (heat & cool)
  • Programmable thermal ramp chambers
  • Gravity ovens and incubators
  • Vacuum and pressure chambers
  • Humidity chamber
  • LDS Vibration table
  • M/RAD Shock table

SAFETY & ABUSE TEST EQUIPMENT

Safety and abuse testing refers to a range of adverse conditions applied to batteries in a contained environment to collect data on their reaction to these adverse conditions. Safety and abuse testing goes beyond ordinary or recommended usage scenarios to assess a battery’s performance when the usage recommendations are violated. Note that unlike many other battery test facilities, MPS has municipal approval to perform these destructive and volatile tests for cells and batteries.

  • Containment chambers
  • Hydraulic ram crush rigs
  • Impact bars and ball
  • Burn chamber
  • Overcharge chamber
  • Short-circuit at ambient and high temperature chambers
  • Nail penetration rig
  • Chamber exhaust scrubber

ELECTRICAL PERFORMANCE TEST EQUIPMENT

Maccor battery testers

Batteries seldom operate under ideal conditions, so testing must reflect the diversity of the environment your product and battery will experience in the field, especially “corner-case” scenarios. Typical performance tests include cycle life, accelerated life, discharge rates, duty cycles, rate capability, actual capacity, and self-discharge tests. Our state-of-the-art test facilities and equipment offer the widest possible range of customized test procedures, ensuring that your batteries perform as advertised in all scenarios.

  • Maccor automated battery cyclers
  • 48 Channel Maccor Smart Battery Module
  • HP DC power supplies
  • TDI load (600A)
  • Shunt resistors
  • AC Impedance analyzer (Princeton Versastat3 and 4)
  • Fuel gauge and charger circuit characterization
  • Custom test circuits

DATA COLLECTION EQUIPMENT

Whether providing Regulatory compliance, PerformanceSafety, and Environmental testing, MPS documents all test procedures and digitally captures all test results with a myriad of data collection and logging equipment (listed below) that is integrated with our test equipment.  These test reports can be provided to our customers and/or regulatory bodies for their review and analysis.

  • Maccor automated battery cyclers
  • HP Agilent 34970A data loggers
  • Sartorius balances
  • Digital pressure and vacuum transducers
  • Agilent 34901A DMM
  • Mitutoyo digital calipers
  • Temperature data loggers

Leveraging one of the largest test facilities in North America, MPS offers vendor analysis and technical audits, helping our customers with battery-related sourcing and technical decisions, including:

  • Strategic vendor selection
  • Second source identification and validation
  • Independent vendor analysis
  • On-site technical audit of cell vendor
  • Ongoing quality assurance tests
  • Troubleshooting and root cause analysis
